SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS

The images shown below are mostly taken from propaganda distributed by the U-Vistract money scheme. The scheme’s newsletter, Papala Chronicles, is the source of most of the color images here. It was an invaluable source for my research and was available online until 2015. Printed and photocopied versions of the newsletter were distributed around PNG at meetings of U-Vistract ‘investors’. It provided a kind of ‘evidence’ that the scheme was really working, even as people waited in vain for their promised millions. The high production values and use of English reflect the target audience of middle-class literate urban Papua New Guineans. Also notable is the use of bible verses and ‘prosperity gospel’ themes.
